A THOUGHT FROM THE WORD: “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord….And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

“Come, thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.” (A hymn by Charles Wesley)

We are now in the final week of the season of Advent which began on the first Sunday of December. For many, if not most, Christians it is a time when we begin to prepare for Christmas, to celebrate the birth of Jesus. However, it was not until the middle-ages that Advent became connected to the birth. Before that it was the time that expressed the longing for Jesus’s return, the time expressed in the Lord’s Prayer—”Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” All too often, that gets overlooked, even lost, in the frantic rush toward Christmas. We all too easily forget that peace has not yet come to earth. But, that is God’s promise to us, part of the “good news” announced with Jesus’s birth.
