Lucy and The Queen Bug: Don't Confuse Me With the Facts

During the school year, in my last pastorate, I regularly sent e-mail devotionals to our college students who requested it. I would like to share one of those with you. It was based on a “Peanuts” cartoon:

In one early episode, Lucy, who’s always right about everything and knows everything (she thinks) is kneeling on the ground pointing to something.
She says to CB, “You know why that big black bug doesn’t move?”
“Because she’s the Queen Bug! She just sits there, see, while the other bugs do all the work.”
CB says, “That’s not a bug…That’s a JELLY-BEAN.”
Lucy replies, “By golly, you’re right, Charlie Brown.”
She stands up, walks away and says, “I wonder how a jelly-bean ever got to be queen?”

Lucy can never learn, she’s too rigid and inflexible, too proud–she can never admit to being wrong. If we are to walk with God it requires the exact opposite attitude. Because, what the Christian life is about is being changed by God, growing, learning. Don’t be discouraged when you see shortcomings in your life or impatient with others. God is working on us. One day He promises we’ll arrive. We’ll be like Jesus!

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM, for we shall see him as he is. -I John 3:2

I think that has to be the most remarkable promise in the Bible–we will be like Jesus! It is certainly my greatest hope. Can we covenant to help each other on the journey?
